As a gaming creator you NEED to be putting out clips of your streams/VODs because otherwise it is going to be super hard for you to grow. Sometimes you'll make clips on your console or OBS, and you need a tool to reframe them. Sometimes you have a full length VOD that you need to then chop up. I include tools in this list for both purposes, and even Opus can technically do both. Let's explore!
You'll see once you read it that this post takes a bit of a different approach compared to the others like it in this series. I wanted to give you the best options, and I did, but I do feel like there is something missing in this space. If you have an opinion on a tool, or know of one that I somehow missed please reach out on socials!
BONUS: Nexus Clips
While sort of a competitor to Opus, I have been hearing from a couple streamers that it does well with gaming content. Since I haven't gotten able to test it out myself I am not sure, but I wanted to include it.
2nd BONUS: VideoBolt Resize + VideoBolt Merge
Okay these are two quick tools that I have used SO MUCH with my gaming clips, that I absolutely HAD to include them. They are two similar things, but I use them separately.
Resize is simply just taking a 16:9 and turning it into a basic 9:16, and for some clips that is all you need. Such as with Breath of the Wild for example I really didn't anything fancy for 90% of the clips, and the very few ones that I did need a split view I threw it into OpusClip.
However when it came to just a pure vertical FILL, I found that Videobolt was significantly faster at processing it. The Merge tool is similar and can do the aspect ratio change, however if you have MULTIPLE clips, like in Zelda the Switch only lets you clip the last 30 sec, and you have 2-3 of those 30 sec clips. This will help you splice them all together.
#5 - Eklipse.GG
Look out of all of the gaming clip finder tools I thought this one stood out, and I tried their ai clip maker. However the interface is absolutely horrendous, and the UX actually gets in the way of you actually using the tool.
So MAYBE it is the best at finding or making the gaming clips, but without a proper UI/UX to use it we can't find out.
#4 - Replay Buffer in OBS+Aitum, Streamlabs, or Meld Studio
This might seem like a no brainer, but just in case it isn't. If you are already using a tool like this, which 99% of us are, then you might as well set up an automation on your streamdeck, or at least a hotkey on your keyboard, and just use the clipping feature built in. If you have a vertical canvas already, then you already have the clip laid out the way you need to.
Quick Shoutout to the Clipping button feature on Xbox/PlayStation/Nintendo too
While you'll still need to reframe it using tools mentioned in this list, the sheer quickness of grabbing a cool moment using clips is no comparison.
However please listen to this quick warning, I actually lost over 200+ clips on Xbox. Simply because the Xbox OS just lost my clips. There was literally not rhyme or reason, and I had PLENTY of storage, even a backup drive for games so that the internal storage was free for clips.
This happened to me not once, but THREE times (at least that I noticed). One of those times I lost a couple hundred really amazing clips. So I set up the built in automation to automatically send over saved clips to onedrive. I don't even touch the internal clip saving mechanism anymore.
#3 - CrossClip
One of the first tools on the market. It had copied JoinCombo, which was the first, but in opinion it actually surpassed it.
I was a little grossed out by the blatant copying, but after trying both a ton. I could not get my ultrawide footage to ever work in Combo, and the founder kept blowing me off about it. Even 4k footage would sometimes mess up too. Not to mention at the beginning there was NO local upload option on Combo. Whereas CrossClip did have it.
I've thrown hundreds, if not over a 1000 clips into Crossclip, and only faced issues a few times. I think that is a great ratio.
#2 - OpusClip - ClipAnything model
For me this has been a useful tool for any sort of content. Even my gaming videos like State of Decay, I was able to get a handful of good clips per stream. However compared to my 85% usability rate on podcast videos, it is more closer to 55% or 65% usability with gaming videos.
Since I am a partner I can test it out more, and not have to worry as much about credits. However I know that for a small streamer you may not have that. Test it out with the free plan, and see if it works for you!
#1 - BLANK
I'm actually going to throw a curveball to you all out there. While I think OpusClip is phenomenal, and it works with a majority of games if you're willing to tweak the clips. I do not think there is actually any tool on the market that does well enough with gaming content.
I've used Crossclip for all of those Xbox or Apex PC clips I had lying around. Now I mostly use Opus and Videobolt for reframing.
However when it comes to clipping my gaming streams I am not 100% what to use. I am happy to toss someone's Twitch/YouTube stream into OpusClip to see how well it does with your game of choice.
