To any and all fans of technology, and the Smartglasses market. There have been SO MANY new products coming out (or close to coming out on Kickstarter). I created this post a little while back - The Rise of SmartGlasses (Full List). That one included everything I found thus far, which also included AR and VR glasses too (minus a few VR headsets). However this post today is purely just the Smartglasses on the market.
There will be two, sorta three, categories: HUD, Recording, and Both. Meaning the glasses that have a screen or heads up display, the glasses that can record content or livestream (but might not have a screen), and then the few glasses on the market that happen to have Both.
I'm making this database 'for myself' to be honest, as I have had a hard time myself even keeping up with all the ones I found. Thus I realized that if a big ol'nerd like me is having a hard time, then other people will be as well. I figured I might as well make it into a post for you all to use too!
Here is the Database First
Go ahead and scan through this real quick, maybe open it up in a new tab would be a good idea, and then come back to read the rest of the post.
Why would you want a pair of Smartglasses?
Whether you are living out your aspirations of becoming Tony Stark with having your own JARVIS (or at least ChatGPT) in your ear... or you are simply wanting a way to enhance your life more without using your smartphone even more.
I started with a simple pair of audio-only glasses, so that I could listen to music. However I explore a lot, especially when I travel, and I would love to have a GPS on screen in front of my eyes. Even though I basically have 3D Google maps in my head!
Additionally, as a content creator I am bursting at the seams with ideas of how I could use the Meta Glasses or other Recording Smartglasses to create really interesting pieces of content. If I ever go on stage for a keynote, if I was at a concert, maybe a Unboxing POV, and more.
Almost all of them have speakers for music/podcasts/calls
I included the Audio-Only type as I figured many people would be interested in that, as you can still technically use voice-assistant via those type of glasses. Plus it is a foray into this type of technology.
Being able to listen to audiobooks, podcasts, music, or hop on a call while being hands free is not something to take lightly in your decision making.
However pretty much every pair of Smartglasses tend to have some sort of audio feature, as it is imperative for the smart features to work. That is unless the main focus is the screen, but I'm pretty sure even most of the HUD type glasses tend to have speakers as well. (Not much in the way of bone conduction glasses at the moment surprisingly).
Recording Glasses are the new META when it comes to content creation
As I said before the possibilities are endless, and while you need to be careful of invasion of privacy. As long as you get permission to record people ahead of time, or it is expressively clear that you are going to record (such as if you are on stage at an event). Then you should be very direct about your recording intentions.
I can see the possibility of doing in person interviews being a promising option with these type of products.
Going bike riding, hiking, or through some IRL event that you would want to showcase to the world.
Heads Up Display glasses are super useful at bridging that gap between you and the internet
Without having to have your smartphone be out 24/7.
I mentioned before the advent of using the GPS features, it is like a video game truly. Being able to see the directions from Google maps directly to your eyeballs... "turn left in 30 ft" is amazing.
Speaking of recording, even if the HUD glasses don't have cameras, the prospect of using the HUD type for the teleprompter features. Whether you are on the TEDx stage, or simply in front of your computer recording a YouTube video. Having your script right in front of your eyes.
How do you decide which one to get?
I can't tell you what you spend your money on, and in fact the main reason why I don't have any yet myself at the time of this writing. What I can say is at the moment, don't sleep on FB marketplace, as I've been seeing a number of Meta Glasses on there. Presumably people bought them, didn't make enough content with them (or weren't creators themselves), or they wanted to upgrade to the Meta 2 glasses.
I did however buy these bluetooth glasses, which are a fun way to dip your toes in the water if you will. For $30 on Amazon or TikTok, you can get glasses that you can listen to music with or take calls. I bought them as the job I had at the time I couldn't wear earbuds, and it would get really slow a lot of the time.
Might be an interesting way too in order to get USED to wearing glasses, if you are not accustomed to wearing them. That was my thought process, so that I could get in the habit of putting them on more. Then by the time I bought smarter ones I would have gotten used to them.
Another thing you might have thought of is that depending on which glasses you get, that changes which AI service you can have access to. If you go with the Meta's then you are exclusively using Meta AI (which is not that great, and I don't trust them with my data whatsoever). Conversely, other glasses might use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc. Maybe even a pair at some point will let you connect with Home Assistant OS, and then you can use YOUR OWN Local LLM AI that you have exclusive access to. Really living your Iron Man JARVIS dreams then.
One more thing! Something I haven't had a chance to experience yet, and I fear how much I'd hate it. Is that a lot of these Smartglasses companies are charging a monthly service subscription. Presumably for the AI chatbot tokens, or for extend revenue for the company's growth. Not sure. However that is a huge turn off for a lot of people. I don't intend on using the AI that much, as opposed to just looking something up on my phone, but maybe I would with things like pulling up GPS/Music controls.
What should You do?
Well if you really want my opinion I am leaning towards the Rokid glasses. They are an interesting middle ground between HUD and Recording, they aren't Meta (which is a plus), and you can use a more popular AI model.
They're seemingly not great at customer support from what I've seen from comments online. Plus a lot of these
Alternatively, the Neomix glasses are extraordinarily cheap compared to the rest of the products on the list. For me I think recording is the baseline, a HUD is extra in most cases, but useful. The glasses that have both are few and far in between, but I think that is the future for this technology medium.
If you have any links that I should add to this list let me know.
